Our Story

ScansAmerica’s humble beginnings involve one scanner and two employees

About Us

Scans America was founded in 1995. Our primary mission was to provide back file scanning support for the document imaging customers of Reams Computer Corporation and later for Unity Business Systems.

By 1997, we had expanded our capabilities to provide litigation support for several large law firms in northern Virginia and Washington DC. This gave us the opportunity to develop expertise in providing scanning solutions with electronic bates numbers and full text search engines.

Our next challenge was to digitize land and criminal records for our Circuit Court customers. This required an investment in the equipment to scan microfilm, microfiche, maps, and books. These projects also required the development of rigorous quality control procedures because of the importance and longevity of these records.

By 2000, Scans America had expanded into a 2,100-square-foot facility in Newport News, VA, with 20 employees. By this time, we were also scanning Planning and Engineering files for our local government customers. These records included large format drawings and aperture cards. As a result, we became experts at scanning and restoring drawings.

Our first federal government customer was the US Navy. This project was our greatest challenge to date. It required us to digitize drawings and manuals from ships and then convert them into searchable and linked PDF files. These PDF files were eventually imported into a Microsoft SharePoint site to create a library with worldwide access.

Today, ScansAmerica is headquartered in a 13,000-square-foot facility in Hampton, VA. We have developed additional expertise in the handling and scanning of human resources (HR) and financial records. We process, index, and quality check (QC) paper and digital records by the millions every month.
